Screen Dance

Navarasa pursues an idea- that emotions empower and that voluntarily manifesting them can crack the masks to reveal our very core. This experimental dance/theatre film is inspired by the concept of the Navarasas or the nine emotions from the ancient Sanskrit treatise on the performing arts called the Natyashastra. The film is an exploration of the power of dance and the rasas to bring forth a heightened awareness of a woman's unique individuality

his is part of my video series on immigrant women's voices in the bay area. This idea gained momentum in the wake of post election rhetoric of biases, hate and intense prejudice against the immigrants. This project will focus on various immigrant women of first generation. They are artists, entrepreneurs, social workers, teachers, mothers, wives and much more.

What are their stories? What memory and cultural codes do they carry?Where is home for them? This is a quest for various narratives. A search of stories of homes left behind and new homes made in strange lands.A project to understand the richness of being from a different culture. Above all to redefine who an immigrant is!
